About this job

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is hiring a full-time Cattle Ranch Hand at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center near Clay Center. USMARC covers approximately 34,000 acres and conducts practical research addressing high-priority challenges in the beef cattle, sheep, and swine industries. This position works primarily in beef production and supports the daily care of a herd ranging from roughly 800 to 1,200 cattle. What you will do • Feed, water, observe, move, and provide routine husbandry for cattle across the research center • Check animals carefully and communicate health, behavior, or welfare concerns to the appropriate staff • Support production and research activities while following animal-care and study procedures • Assist with pasture management and travel between pastures, pens, and livestock facilities • Maintain fences, gates, water systems, machinery, and other ranch infrastructure • Operate agricultural equipment and help keep it clean, safe, and ready for seasonal work • Collect or record research information accurately when assigned • Respond to changing livestock needs during irregular hours and adverse Nebraska weather Qualifications A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent plus one year of cattle-care and management experience is required. Relevant completed education may substitute for experience year for year. Applicants must be precise, attentive, able to maintain equipment and pastures, and hold a valid driver's license while meeting university driving requirements. A physical and driving-record review are required; a CDL is not. The starting wage is at least $18.55 per hour.
