North Dakota State University's Dickinson Research Extension Center is hiring a temporary Ranch Hand for its ranch near Manning. This mixed livestock and crop position covers cattle care, calving records, hay production, agricultural equipment, facility maintenance, and research support throughout the year. Ranch and livestock work • Establish dependable routines for cattle kept on pasture or in pens • Prepare feed rations using grinding and chopping equipment, distribute feed, and maintain consumption records • Inspect livestock daily for health and adequate water and assist with veterinary procedures • Check cattle during calving, weigh and tag newborn calves, and keep accurate calving records • Move livestock between locations and help handle cattle for research measurements and data collection • Clean and repair shelters, troughs, barns, storage areas, fences, pens, and corrals Crop and equipment work • Operate tractors and other agricultural machinery for tillage, seeding, harvest, and feed-crop production • Mow, rake, bale, haul, and stack hay • Assist with crop hauling, storage, weed control, and ranch-site maintenance • Collect hay, crop, and soil samples for testing • Tow livestock trailers and perform routine machinery and facility upkeep Applicants must be at least 18, hold a valid driver's license, have farming and ranching experience, understand livestock care, and be capable with agricultural machinery, facilities, and large livestock trailers. The work requires clear communication, independent judgment, teamwork, and a successful background check. Pay starts at $18 per hour and increases with experience. The schedule includes about 20 weeks of full-time work, possibly with overtime, followed by about 32 weeks at 19.5 hours per week. Some weekends are required.
