Berkshire Hog & Livestock Caretaker
Beaver Dam Farms
π πΎ π
About this job
Beaver Dam Farms in Colbert, Georgia is hiring a full- or part-time livestock caretaker. The independent historic farm keeps Berkshire pigs together with horses, Clydesdales, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, and ducks and maintains an organic garden. This role is centered on consistent daily husbandry and clean, safe animal spaces.
What you will do
β’ Feed and water Berkshire pigs and the farm's other livestock on the established schedule
β’ Check appetite, movement, behavior, body condition, injuries, and other signs of animal well-being
β’ Handle animals patiently and report illness, distress, or unusual behavior immediately
β’ Clean pens, stalls, barns, coops, feeding areas, and water containers and replace bedding
β’ Unload and organize feed, hay, bedding, and animal-care supplies
β’ Help with seasonal farm improvements and keep barns, feed rooms, tools, and work areas orderly
How the work fits together
The caretaker must learn the normal routine for each species while paying particular attention to pigs' feed, water, fencing, footing, shelter, and social behavior. Work should be completed in an order that avoids cross-contamination and prevents animals from accessing open gates, feed rooms, equipment, or unsafe materials. A good employee notices a small behavior change, records it accurately, and gets help early rather than waiting for the next shift.
What the farm is looking for
Farm or livestock experience is preferred but not required for a candidate who is dependable, observant, and willing to learn. Applicants should be comfortable around both large and small animals, able to lift more than 50 pounds regularly, and willing to work outdoors in all weather. A valid driver's license is preferred. The role calls for self-motivation, respectful animal handling, strong attendance, and the ability to work independently as well as with the farm team.
Schedule, conditions, and compensation
The published pay range is $13β$25 per hour, with full-time and part-time schedules available. Weekend and holiday coverage may be required because the animals need care every day. Applicants should confirm how experience affects starting pay, expected weekly hours, benefit eligibility, overtime, and the rotation for early, late, weekend, and holiday chores.
This is an in-person agricultural position. Farm priorities can change with animal health, weather, crop condition, equipment availability, and harvest timing, so the successful person must communicate clearly and adjust without losing sight of safety or animal welfare. Daily notes and records should be complete enough that another team member can understand what was observed, what was done, and what still needs attention. Tools, vehicles, gates, feed areas, water systems, and workspaces should be left clean, secure, and ready for the next shift.
Applicants should expect physical work that can include standing or walking for long periods, bending, lifting, repetitive hand tasks, wet or dusty conditions, and work outdoors or in warm agricultural buildings. A dependable arrival time matters because livestock and living production systems cannot simply wait for a late shift. Candidates should ask the employer about the exact weekly schedule, overtime treatment, training period, and any benefit eligibility before accepting an offer.
