About this job

Plowshare Farm Lifesharing Community is hiring for the Dairy Farmer position in Greenfield, NH. This hands-on role supports the operation's day-to-day production and care work. Reliable execution and early communication matter because the work directly affects plants, animals, equipment, coworkers, customers, or the surrounding property. What you will do β€’ Feed, water, observe, move, and care for animals according to the farm's routines and welfare standards. β€’ Clean and bed housing, maintain fences and water systems, and keep feed, tools, and care areas orderly. β€’ Report changes in appetite, behavior, movement, injury, health, births, or facility condition immediately. β€’ Take primary responsibility for caring for the land and animals, including herd-health observation, daily husbandry, dairy work, and the routines supporting milk, egg, and meat production for the community. β€’ Plan and carry out pasture care, grazing rotation, fencing, and haying, checking animals, forage, water, gates, and boundaries closely enough to adjust the day's work before a small concern becomes a welfare or feed problem. β€’ Operate and maintain farm equipment within demonstrated experience, organize service and repair needs, and work with the farm crew to develop sound biodynamic animal, soil, pasture, and production practices. How the work fits together Animal checks set the order of the day. Feed, water, health, weather exposure, and secure housing are confirmed before lower-priority projects. The employee records or reports observations, completes assigned husbandry and facility work, and rechecks gates, animals, equipment, and supplies before the shift ends. At Plowshare Farm Lifesharing Community, the employer also makes these role-specific priorities clear: Take primary responsibility for caring for the land and animals, including herd-health observation, daily husbandry, dairy work, and the routines supporting milk, egg, and meat production for the community. Plan and carry out pasture care, grazing rotation, fencing, and haying, checking animals, forage, water, gates, and boundaries closely enough to adjust the day's work before a small concern becomes a welfare or feed problem. Operate and maintain farm equipment within demonstrated experience, organize service and repair needs, and work with the farm crew to develop sound biodynamic animal, soil, pasture, and production practices. What the employer is looking for β€’ Practical experience with dairy animals, pasture care, grazing rotation, fencing, haying, equipment maintenance, herd-health oversight, and other animal-husbandry responsibilities. β€’ Openness to biodynamic principles and to living within an inclusive community where people with and without developmental disabilities share daily life; direct support work may be a future possibility but is not the opening's primary need. β€’ Dependable attendance, direct communication, and willingness to follow the employer's safety, quality, and customer- or production-care procedures. β€’ Ability to complete the role's active, in-person work and to ask for instruction before using unfamiliar tools, equipment, products, or animal-handling methods. Schedule, conditions, and compensation The position includes two free days per week and six weeks of vacation annually. Plowshare provides private on-farm housing suitable for an individual, couple, or small family; weekday community lunches and a share of farm vegetables, dairy, and meat; health insurance with a monthly HSA contribution; and eligibility for a retirement plan after the first year. The cash benefit is commensurate with experience and responsibility, but no numeric amount or standard daily animal-care rotation is published. Confirm milking times, weekend and emergency coverage, housing terms, start date, and all benefit details during the hiring conversation. The employer does not publish a numeric wage range on this page, so no compensation has been estimated. Applicants should confirm the final hours, overtime treatment, starting assignment, travel or reporting point, supplied equipment, and benefit eligibility directly with the employer before accepting an offer. This is an in-person agricultural and animal-care position with a small operation. Daily priorities can change with weather, plant or animal condition, equipment availability, customer schedules, and the season. The successful person should arrive ready to work, communicate early when a task or condition is unclear, follow the employer's safety and quality procedures, and leave tools, vehicles, production areas, and job sites secure and ready for the next shift. Applicants should expect active work that may include long periods of standing or walking, bending, lifting, repetitive hand tasks, noise, dust, mud, pollen, heat, cold, rain, or work around moving equipment. The exact physical demands differ by assignment. Candidates should discuss any accommodation needs with the employer and confirm the final schedule, overtime treatment, training period, travel expectations, and benefit eligibility before accepting an offer. Only compensation and benefits expressly published by the employer are included here; unpublished terms have not been estimated. How to apply Email service@plowsharefarm.org or call 603-547-2547 to start a conversation about the Dairy Farmer role. Introduce yourself, explain your interest in Plowshare's farm and community, and describe the herd sizes and species you have handled, milking systems used, pasture rotations planned, fencing and hay work completed, animal-health responsibilities held, and farm equipment maintained. Include a resume, availability, household and housing needs, and professional farm references if available.
