Fall Organic Field Crew

Hutchins Farm is hiring for the Fall Organic Field Crew position in Concord, MA. This hands-on role supports the operation's day-to-day production and care work. Reliable execution and early communication matter because the work directly affects plants, animals, equipment, coworkers, customers, or the surrounding property. What you will do • Seed, transplant, cultivate, irrigate, harvest, wash, pack, and store crops according to the farm's plan and food-safety procedures. • Use and care for assigned hand tools, wash-pack equipment, carts, and field equipment within training. • Monitor crops and communicate pest, disease, water, weather, quality, or harvest-timing concerns promptly. • Plant, weed, harvest, wash, and pack a wide range of certified-organic vegetables and small fruit, following the crew lead's quality, pace, and harvest-stage instructions. • Assist with greenhouse work, irrigation, crop and field upkeep, or produce sales when assigned, moving between tasks as harvest volume, weather, and farm needs change. • Handle produce carefully from field through packing, maintain clean containers and work areas, and communicate crop damage, quality, water, tool, or timing concerns before they become larger losses. How the work fits together Farm priorities follow crop condition, weather, harvest commitments, and customer orders. The crew checks urgent irrigation and harvest needs first, then moves through field production, post-harvest handling, accurate packing, storage, and cleanup. Each employee's work affects both crop life and the quality customers receive. What the employer is looking for • Interest in farming, gardening, food, or sustained outdoor work, plus dependable availability for the agreed fall commitment and willingness to work at least one weekend day. • Ability to repeatedly lift more than 50 pounds, work actively in varied weather, maintain a productive pace, and cooperate with the field, wash-pack, greenhouse, farmstand, and market teams. • Dependable attendance, direct communication, and willingness to follow the employer's safety, quality, and customer- or production-care procedures. • Ability to complete the role's active, in-person work and to ask for instruction before using unfamiliar tools, equipment, products, or animal-handling methods. Schedule, conditions, and compensation The fall opening starts in late August and runs through the end of October. Full-time crew members work five days per week; part-time crew members work at least three days. Everyone must work at least one weekend day. The normal workday is 7:00 a.m.–4:00 or 4:30 p.m. with an unpaid one-hour lunch. Pay starts at $16.50 per hour, with a $0.50 bonus for every hour worked when the employee completes the agreed time commitment. Free vegetables are included, and longer-term employees may receive performance-based increases. Housing is not available. The employer publishes starting compensation of $16.5 per hour; no upper limit is stated. This is an in-person agricultural production position with a small operation.
