Crooked Porch Farm is hiring Farm Crew Members in Hillsville. Join a small family team growing vegetables for farmers markets and local pickup customers, with full- and part-time seasonal options. What you will do • Seed greenhouse trays, transplant crops, and trellis tomatoes and cucumbers. • Harvest, wash, pack, and prepare weekly produce orders. • Cultivate beds, spread amendments, and manage tarps and row covers. • Clean harvest bins and help with field and high-tunnel production. How the work fits together Hailey and Mike Sowden farm alongside their young family, with a focus on fresh vegetables and lasting relationships with their community. Their approach combines field production with protected growing space, allowing greens and other crops to reach customers beyond the main summer season. Soil care includes compost, crop rotation, cover crops, and efforts to limit disturbance. Beneficial insects and protective crop covers are part of their growing system. Produce reaches customers through the Blacksburg and Cobblestone farmers markets and pickup arrangements at Red Hill General Store. The business brings growing, harvesting, and direct sales together, so careful work in the field contributes directly to the quality of the food customers take home. The owners value both productive land and a manageable family farming life. What the employer is looking for • Be reliable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working alone or with others. • Lift 50 pounds and handle bending, crouching, and outdoor weather. • Have dependable transportation; farm or food experience is helpful, not essential. Schedule, conditions, and compensation Pay starts at $16.50 hourly, with experience considered. The main season extends through November, with flexible start and end dates. Early starts can be 7 a.m. Employment begins with a two-week paid trial.
