Farm Crew Member

Mama Bird Farm is hiring a Farm Crew Member for the remaining 2026 growing season in Friday Harbor. Work with a small island farm growing vegetables and flowers for local customers. What you will do • Plant, tend, and harvest vegetables, greens, tomatoes, and flowers. • Wash and pack crops, prune tomatoes, and manage irrigation. • Prepare fields, transplant crops, and help with crop protection and cleanup. • Assist with market sales and deliveries to island customers. How the work fits together Mara Lawrence and Lars Johnson started Mama Bird Farm in 2014. Both have deep ties to San Juan Island, and their work has transformed former sheep pasture into a productive vegetable and flower operation. Establishing the farm involved building access, water systems, greenhouses, and space to handle the harvest. Today, the growing program includes heirloom tomatoes, fresh greens, other seasonal vegetables, and cut flowers. The owners aim to protect the wider ecosystem as well as the crops, including trees and the creek that shape the property. Cover cropping and rotations help support the soil. Produce reaches island households through markets, local stores, restaurants, and food-hub connections. Crew members contribute to a farm where growing, preparing orders, and getting food to nearby customers are closely connected. What the employer is looking for • Have a driver's license, transportation, and the stamina for repetitive outdoor work. • Work accurately, communicate clearly, and collaborate while also completing tasks independently. • Be comfortable with early starts, greenhouse heat, and regular lifting and bending. Schedule, conditions, and compensation Starting pay is $18 hourly for about 40 hours weekly through November. The usual days are Monday–Thursday and Saturday, with an unpaid lunch break. Produce and flowers are provided. Housing is not included. The farm requires a smoke-free, alcohol-free, and drug-free workplace.
