Thornfield Farm is hiring a Farm Crew Member in Fincastle. Join a small family team producing vegetables and cut flowers for local markets and community food programs. What you will do • Plant, weed, harvest, wash, and pack vegetables. • Work carefully and efficiently on hand-labor production tasks. • Follow crop-handling instructions and help improve farm systems. • Take responsibility for independent work as well as shared crew assignments. How the work fits together Susanna Thornton began the current farm enterprise in 2015 after gaining vegetable-growing experience in Maine. Returning to family land in Southwest Virginia gave her a place to build a locally focused agricultural business. Her partner Alex joined the following year, and the operation now combines vegetables, flowers, and meat production with the support of several generations of family. Susanna manages the business and crew while also growing vegetables and arranging flowers. Alex works with animals and market sales. Thornfield's relationship with the Roanoke food-access organization LEAP is an important part of its purpose: produce donations and a share of market sales support broader community access to food. Crew members contribute to a farm that connects production, family life, and regional food relationships. What the employer is looking for • Stay motivated during repetitive, physically demanding work in all weather. • Ask questions, learn from feedback, and follow efficient methods. • Work independently when needed and contribute a constructive attitude. Schedule, conditions, and compensation Pay starts at $16 hourly, with a paid half-hour lunch and vegetable seconds. Typical weekday hours are 8 a.m.–4 p.m., starting earlier in summer. Some four-day arrangements are possible. The season continues until the week before Thanksgiving. Rain pants, boots, and wash-station aprons are provided.
