Garden & Food Access Coordinator

Broadmoor Improvement Association is hiring for the Garden & Food Access Coordinator position in Broadmoor neighborhood, New Orleans, LA. This hands-on role supports the operation's day-to-day production and care work. Reliable execution and early communication matter because the work directly affects plants, animals, equipment, coworkers, customers, or the surrounding property. What you will do • Seed, transplant, cultivate, irrigate, harvest, wash, pack, and store crops according to the farm's plan and food-safety procedures. • Use and care for assigned hand tools, wash-pack equipment, carts, and field equipment within training. • Monitor crops and communicate pest, disease, water, weather, quality, or harvest-timing concerns promptly. • Plan seasonal planting and maintain the food forest, rain garden, pantry garden, and other community beds through planting, watering, composting, harvesting, tool care, and safety checks. • Track and prepare harvests for pantry use, coordinate food pickups and donations, set up and operate pantry distributions, support guest check-in, and complete required cleanup, logs, and compliance records. • Schedule and lead volunteers and community events, maintain program data, support outreach and funding reports, and help keep gardens and the pantry ready before, during, and after outages or disasters. How the work fits together Farm priorities follow crop condition, weather, harvest commitments, and customer orders. The crew checks urgent irrigation and harvest needs first, then moves through field production, post-harvest handling, accurate packing, storage, and cleanup. What the employer is looking for • Experience in gardening, farming, urban agriculture, or related landscape work, plus strong interest in food justice, volunteer support, and practical neighborhood service. • Valid driver's license and reliable cargo-capable transportation, ability to lift 50 pounds and work outdoors in all weather, basic Google Suite and data-entry skills, dependable independent work, and ability to pass a background check. • Dependable attendance, direct communication, and willingness to follow the employer's safety, quality, and customer- or production-care procedures. • Ability to complete the role's active, in-person work and to ask for instruction before using unfamiliar tools, equipment, products, or animal-handling methods. Schedule, conditions, and compensation This is a part-time, non-exempt position of 30 hours per week at $15 per hour with no benefits. Typical days are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday based on pantry and garden needs, with required in-person work, a flexible schedule, and some evening or weekend assignments. The employer publishes $15 per hour. This is an in-person agricultural production position with a small operation.
