About this job

Lan Su Chinese Garden is hiring a Horticulture Manager in Portland. Lead daily plant care and the horticulture team, working with the Curator of Horticulture to maintain the garden's living collections and distinctive presentation. What you will do • Supervise staff and volunteers and organize daily horticultural work. • Care for gardens, greenhouse collections, seasonal plantings, and penjing displays. • Manage plant nutrition and integrated pest control and coordinate fish care with facilities staff. How the work fits together Lan Su brings together plants, architecture, art, and cultural learning within a Chinese scholar-garden setting. Its name reflects the relationship between Portland and Suzhou, and its programs invite visitors to explore Chinese traditions through the garden and the activities held there. The nonprofit presents hundreds of botanical and cultural programs each year and serves as a platform for local Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. Stewardship here means caring for a living collection as well as a place of cultural significance. The horticulture team's work shapes what visitors encounter, from the condition of individual plants to the character of seasonal displays. What the employer is looking for • Have three years of horticultural experience, including two years supervising or leading a team. • Bring pruning, irrigation, plant-care, and pest-management skills. • Hold a driver's license and handle outdoor physical work, ladders, and 50-pound lifting. • Relevant education, public-garden experience, and knowledge of Chinese horticulture are preferred. Schedule, conditions, and compensation Salary is $50,000–$53,000 annually. The usual schedule is 40 hours, Sunday–Thursday, with occasional adjustments. Benefits include employer-paid employee health and dental coverage, paid leave, retirement matching, and garden-related discounts and memberships. How to apply Email a cover letter, resume, and three references to lansuhr@lansugarden.org with Horticulture Manager in the subject line. Send questions by email rather than phone. Highlight your horticultural leadership, collection care, and approach to safe, collaborative work.
