About this job

Kadiak Farms is hiring a grow technician to support BrightBox Farms and Mal'uk Farms, two year-round hydroponic container farms in Kodiak. The farms produce lettuce, salad mixes, microgreens, herbs, and other leafy greens for the local community. This is a practical controlled-environment role spanning plant care, harvest and packaging, system sanitation, basic maintenance, delivery, and customer support. What you will do • Carry out seeding, transplanting, crop care, harvesting, packaging, and delivery according to the production plan. • Follow planting and harvest schedules so finished crops align with customer demand. • Monitor nutrient levels, plant growth, and environmental conditions and record or report concerns promptly. • Use the farm's pest- and disease-prevention procedures and protect food-safe production areas. • Clean, maintain, and calibrate hydroponic systems, tools, and work areas; escalate repairs to the farm manager. • Assist customers and complete other farm or community tasks when assigned. How the work fits together The work connects each crop stage. Accurate seeding affects transplant counts; nutrient and environmental checks protect growth; clean harvest and packaging routines protect quality; and good records help the farm manager correct a problem before the next cycle. Because container farms concentrate production equipment in a small space, the technician must keep walkways, food-contact areas, reservoirs, and tools orderly while shifting between repetitive plant tasks and troubleshooting. What the employer is looking for • Ability to troubleshoot equipment, perform routine maintenance, and make basic repairs. • Capacity to work independently, follow written protocols, manage time, and communicate clearly with the farm manager. • Comfort using food-safe sanitizing chemicals and required protective equipment. • Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and complete repetitive movements; a clean driver's license and hydroponics or plant-science experience are preferred. • Respect for local cultural values and the ability to work effectively with Tribal Members. Schedule, conditions, and compensation The published range is $15–$19 per hour depending on experience. The opening is based at the Kodiak growing operation and preference is given to qualified Native Village of Afognak Tribal Members or descendants. The employer does not publish a detailed weekly schedule or benefit package in the job description, so candidates should confirm hours, shift timing, weekend crop checks, delivery expectations, and benefit eligibility before accepting an offer. This is an in-person agricultural production position with a small operation. Daily priorities can change with weather, plant or animal condition, equipment availability, customer schedules, and the season. The successful person should arrive ready to work, communicate early when a task or condition is unclear, follow the employer's safety and quality procedures, and leave tools, vehicles, production areas, and job sites secure and ready for the next shift. Applicants should expect active work that may include long periods of standing or walking, bending, lifting, repetitive hand tasks, noise, dust, mud, pollen, heat, cold, rain, or work around moving equipment. The exact physical demands differ by assignment. Candidates should discuss any accommodation needs with the employer and confirm the final schedule, overtime treatment, training period, travel expectations, and benefit eligibility before accepting an offer. Only compensation and benefits expressly published by the employer are included here; unpublished terms have not been estimated. How to apply Submit the Native Village of Afognak employment application to tribe@afognak.org or deliver it in person to 115 Mill Bay Road, Kodiak. Reference the 2026 Grow Technician opening and explain any hydroponic, greenhouse, food-safety, crop-production, equipment-maintenance, packaging, delivery, or customer-service experience.
