SweetRoot Farm is hiring for the Organic Vegetable Farmhand position in Hamilton, MT. This hands-on role supports the operation's day-to-day production and care work. Reliable execution and early communication matter because the work directly affects plants, animals, equipment, coworkers, customers, or the surrounding property. What you will do • Seed, transplant, cultivate, irrigate, harvest, wash, pack, and store crops according to the farm's plan and food-safety procedures. • Use and care for assigned hand tools, wash-pack equipment, carts, and field equipment within training. • Monitor crops and communicate pest, disease, water, weather, quality, or harvest-timing concerns promptly. • Work across organic vegetable, herb, and flower production, including propagation, bed preparation, seeding, transplanting, cultivation, irrigation, trellising, harvest, washing, packing, and field cleanup. • Handle crops carefully from field through cooler, maintain accurate harvest and packing standards, and help prepare CSA, wholesale, market, or other farm orders according to that day's commitments. • Share routine farm upkeep and, after training, take ownership of assigned systems or production areas when experience and consistency support the farm's higher-responsibility pay levels. What the employer is looking for • This role is best suited to someone who has completed at least one full season on a diversified production farm and understands the pace, repetition, judgment, and teamwork involved in commercial crop work. • Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform sustained active work in heat, cold, rain, mud, wildfire smoke, and changing field conditions, with dependable transportation, communication, and availability through the agreed season end. • Dependable attendance, direct communication, and willingness to follow the employer's safety, quality, and customer- or production-care procedures. • Ability to complete the role's active, in-person work and to ask for instruction before using unfamiliar tools, equipment, products, or animal-handling methods. Schedule, conditions, and compensation Full-time schedules are about 40 hours over five days; part-time schedules are generally 20 to 30 hours over three or four days. The minimum commitment runs through early November, and winter work may be available. Published base compensation is $17 to $19 per hour depending on experience, with $20 or $22 per hour possible for additional responsibility. Hours above 40 are paid at the overtime rate. The farm also lists paid time off after 30 days, farm produce, and subsidized housing when available. Confirm the current start date, assigned days, housing terms, and winter option during hiring.
