Plant Sales Associate — Perennials, Trees and Shrubs

Buchanan's Native Plants is hiring a part-time Plant Sales Associate in Houston. Help customers choose and care for perennials, trees, and shrubs while keeping the nursery's plants healthy and its displays ready to shop. What you will do • Welcome customers and recommend plants suited to their projects and Houston conditions. • Explain plant care and help customers troubleshoot gardening problems. • Water plants, unload racks, and keep products and work areas presentable. • Ask colleagues for help when needed and provide accurate information. How the work fits together Buchanan's grew from Donna Buchanan's search for perennials and native Texas plants that were difficult to find locally. She and her sister Virginia opened their first nursery in 1986, selling natives, herbs, roses, and other garden plants. After operating another small nursery as well, the sisters concentrated the business at its East 11th Street location in the Houston Heights. Donna's son Zach and his wife Heather took over daily operations in 2016. The garden center continues to focus on native plants, organic gardening, and helping customers grow successfully in Houston's climate. Its mix of plants ranges from edible crops and perennials to trees, shrubs, and greenhouse selections. The sales team connects that plant collection with practical guidance for gardeners of different experience levels. What the employer is looking for • Bring strong plant knowledge and customer-service skills. • Five years of relevant industry experience is preferred; experienced home gardeners and horticulture students are also considered. • Be self-motivated and comfortable working outdoors in heat and rain. • Be available on weekends; nursery or landscape certification is a plus. Schedule, conditions, and compensation This opening is part-time. Pay and the weekly schedule are discussed during hiring. Staff receive training in native plants and organic gardening, with support for professional certification. Work is at 611 East 11th Street, Houston.
