47th Avenue Farm is hiring farm crew members for its Grand Island growing site near Dayton. Work alongside managers and a small team to produce vegetables for CSA households and restaurants, with opportunities to develop practical farming skills. What you will do • Seed, transplant, weed, irrigate, and harvest vegetable crops. • Wash, process, and pack produce and maintain accurate records. • Learn safe operation of small farm equipment as assigned. How the work fits together Laura Masterson started the farm in 1996 on a double lot in Portland's Woodstock neighborhood. The original idea—growing fresh food for nearby households—developed into a year-round CSA and relationships with local restaurants. The growing system uses cover crops, beneficial insects, drip irrigation, and conservation tillage to support both production and the surrounding landscape. Summer crops give way to winter greens, roots, and brassicas, so the farm's work continues beyond the usual warm-weather market season. Members collect their shares in the neighborhood where the farm began. Working at Grand Island connects the daily tasks of vegetable growing with this long-running relationship between a farmer and her community. What the employer is looking for • Have a season of full-time vegetable farming or equivalent experience. • Handle repetitive outdoor labor and lift up to 50 pounds. • Be dependable, adaptable, attentive to detail, and comfortable working independently or with others. Schedule, conditions, and compensation Pay is $16/hour, with a CSA share, additional produce, and paid leave. Summer weeks generally run 40–50 hours; winter hours decrease. Housing is unavailable.
