About this job

Small Places is hiring a full-time Farm Apprentice at Finca Tres Robles in Houston. Learn intensive vegetable production while helping grow, prepare, and distribute food for the surrounding community. What you will do • Seed, water, harvest, wash, and weigh produce under the farm manager's direction. • Move soil and mulch, use farm tools, and help manage pests. • Support the farm store, CSA, educational activities, and community events. • Complete off-site farm learning and occasional weekend greenhouse or visitor duties. How the work fits together Small Places was founded in 2014 by Houston brothers Mark, Tommy, and Daniel Garcia-Prats. Their first farm, Finca Tres Robles, brought food production into the city's historic East End. The organization is farmer-founded and managed, with a focus on making working farms part of neighborhood life. Food distribution, farmer training, education, and community gatherings are linked rather than treated as separate activities. The brothers' work developed into a nonprofit in 2022, while retaining the practical emphasis on productive, welcoming local farms. Small Places sees access to healthy food and a connection to place as important parts of community well-being. The apprentice joins that neighborhood-based approach, learning how a farm can produce crops while also maintaining relationships with the people who eat them. What the employer is looking for • Be interested in an agricultural career and committed to learning. • Work outdoors in Houston weather, lift over 50 pounds, and follow English instructions. • Vegetable-growing experience and Spanish are preferred, not required. Schedule, conditions, and compensation Compensation is listed at $18 per hour, paid biweekly on a salaried basis. Benefits include three weeks of paid time off, produce, and a $400 health reimbursement account; confirm reimbursement timing with the employer. Weekend duties occur roughly monthly, with about ten off-site training days yearly. How to apply Use the Farm Apprentice application linked from Small Places' Careers page. Google sign-in is required. Explain your interest in agriculture and food access, relevant practical experience, and availability for the full-time apprenticeship.
