About this job

Chickadee Creek Farm is interviewing for a full-time Farmers Market and Field Team Member for the remainder of its 2026 season in Pennington, New Jersey. Owner Jess Niederer started the independent organic operation in 2010 on her family's preserved farmland. The farm now grows certified-organic vegetables, herbs, flowers, and small fruit for direct-market customers. This position combines practical crop production with meaningful responsibility for one of the farm's market stands. Field responsibilities • Transplant, weed, cultivate, trellis, prune, thin, and care for diversified crops • Harvest vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruit to the quality required for direct sale • Wash, sort, pack, and organize produce for different market destinations • Help prepare tools, harvest containers, field supplies, and work areas • Follow changing seasonal priorities while maintaining a useful and safe pace • Communicate crop damage, quality problems, shortages, or equipment concerns promptly The farm follows a dependable weekly rhythm, but the specific work changes with weather, crop maturity, and sales needs. Employees should expect repetitive physical tasks as well as assignments requiring judgment and close attention. Chickadee Creek values stamina, quick learning, people skills, and the ability to keep a positive, practical attitude during demanding weeks. At least one year of vegetable-growing or comparable fast-paced outdoor experience receives priority, although demonstrated reliability and a strong ability to learn may substitute for some experience. Farmers-market leadership Market staff load the truck, drive to market, build and stock the stand, manage helpers' schedules, monitor vegetable inventory, serve customers, and pack the operation at closing. Farmers-market sales are central to the business, so this is not an occasional add-on. The employee must protect product quality, represent the farm accurately, keep the stand inviting, and make sensible inventory decisions through the market day. A valid driver's license, comfort driving a loaded farm vehicle, customer-service skill, and reliable weekend availability are important. Small-team expectations Crew members work closely enough that incomplete cleanup, weak communication, or poor attendance affects everyone. Successful employees arrive ready for the day's weather, follow instructions, ask timely questions, and finish tasks to the farm's standards. Team members who remain beyond one season may move into increased management and planning responsibility with pay growth based on demonstrated ability. Schedule and season The minimum commitment runs through November 27, 2026, with year-round hours potentially available for interested candidates. Full-time staff generally work about 45 hours across five days, which may include one farmers-market day. Typical hours are 7:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. during July through September and 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. in October and November, although farm tasks do not always end at an exact minute. Compensation and benefits Pay for this combined Farmers Market and Field position is $22–$25 per hour depending on experience. Crew members may take fresh organic produce and buy value-added products at cost. The farm provides one week of paid leave, a 401(k) with a four-percent match, and midyear and year-end profit-sharing bonuses calculated through a transparent performance and tenure system. How to apply Email chickadeecreekfarm@gmail.com with a resume, contact information for two references, and a short note stating your interest. Describe your availability through November, outdoor or vegetable experience, driving record, and any background with harvest quality, direct sales, inventory, market setup, or supervising helpers.
