Organic Market Garden Apprentice - 2027 Season

Apply for the 2027 Organic Market Garden Apprenticeship at Ethos Farm to Health in Long Valley. Join a small crew growing vegetables on an intensively managed, approximately 1.5-acre market garden. The apprenticeship combines production work, practical instruction, and farm-market experience, with housing and a monthly stipend included. What you will do • Sow and transplant crops, irrigate, weed, and help manage greenhouse growing areas. • Prune and trellis crops, use small equipment, and help harvest, wash, and pack vegetables. • Work a farm-market shift and learn how production connects with customers. How the work fits together The market garden uses minimal soil disturbance, crop rotation, compost, and cover crops. Two greenhouses and eight high tunnels support season extension and trellised vegetables. Most produce is sold through the on-farm market. Ethos also maintains a broader preserved landscape of fields, meadows, and woodland. Its farming methods emphasize soil improvement, plant diversity, and habitat for pollinators and other wildlife. Apprentices work within the much smaller vegetable-production area, learning how focused crop care and efficient use of space support a productive market garden. Staff explain the purpose behind their methods as apprentices participate in the growing routine. What the employer is looking for • Bring enthusiasm for food growing, careful work, and learning. Farm or comparable outdoor-work experience is helpful, not required. • Be able to follow feedback, communicate clearly, and stay focused during repetitive and physically demanding work in different weather. Schedule, conditions, and compensation Season: May 1-October 31, 2027. The schedule is five days weekly, typically 40 hours and sometimes up to 50 at peak. Saturday markets rotate, with a weekday off in those weeks. Occasional weekend irrigation or event duties are included. Compensation includes a $1,500 monthly stipend, on-farm cottage housing, produce, and bulk food staples. Educational visits and farm events are also part of the opportunity.
