Assistant Farm Manager

The University of Delaware is hiring an Assistant Farm Manager at the Carvel Research and Education Center in Georgetown. This role supports field research across Carvel and affiliated off-farm locations and provides daily leadership for the Warrington Irrigation Research Farm. Responsibilities • Coordinate field preparation, planting, fertility, irrigation, pesticide application, and harvest for crop research • Keep Warrington's field and irrigation work aligned with research protocols and safety requirements • Set up, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain specialized agricultural and research equipment • Work with project leaders to schedule and complete research and demonstration plots • Support precision-agriculture hardware, GPS systems, data loggers, mapping tools, and field data systems • Supervise farm assistants, seasonal employees, and students, including schedules and training • Maintain operational records, equipment inventories, maintenance logs, and purchase requests • Help deliver field days, tours, demonstrations, and farm safety programs Qualifications An associate degree in agriculture, agronomy, agricultural engineering, or a related field plus three years of relevant experience is required; equivalent preparation is accepted and a bachelor's degree is preferred. Candidates need experience with modern production systems, agricultural machinery, precision-ag tools, and data management. The selected employee must hold or obtain the required Delaware pesticide and nutrient-management credentials and maintain a Class A CDL. This is full-time, physically active farm work in heat, cold, humidity, dust, and chemical-use environments. It may include evenings, weekends, hazardous-weather response, and on-call coverage.
