About this job

Fernbrook Farms is seeking Field Trip Instructors to help students learn about farming, food, and the natural world. Lead hands-on visits through the CSA fields, animal barn, pond, and other learning areas at the family's working farm in Chesterfield. This is a part-time opportunity for an enthusiastic educator who enjoys teaching outside. What you will do • Prepare for visiting groups and help set up the spaces and materials used during a field trip. • Teach planned lessons during visits lasting about three to four hours. • Guide activities exploring crops, soil, farm animals, and the pond environment. • Help maintain students' safety around the farm and clean up after the visit. How the work fits together Fernbrook is a preserved, 230-acre working farm owned by the Kuser family. Its CSA connects families with the source of their vegetables, while its education center introduces children to farming and nearby ecosystems. The property also includes a wholesale nursery and an inn. For a field-trip instructor, the growing fields and farm surroundings become the teaching environment: students can connect a lesson about food or soil with something they can actually see. The education program is built around direct experience and curiosity. Instructors work within that program using prepared lessons, with time for setup and cleanup as well as teaching. What the employer is looking for • Be enthusiastic about teaching students in a farm and nature setting. • Be comfortable leading hands-on activities and paying attention to group safety throughout a visit. • Be available for school-day field trips and communicate which weekdays you can work. Schedule, conditions, and compensation Field trips operate Monday-Friday from September through June. The busiest periods are mid-September to mid-November and late March to mid-June. Typical hours are 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., and instructors can select their available days. Additional education-center work may be possible. Discuss pay and the number of assigned days with the program team. How to apply Email Krystal at krystal.newhall@fernbrookfarms.com to express interest in Field Trip Instructor work. Include your teaching or outdoor-education background and weekday availability. The education center is at 142 Bordentown Georgetown Road, Chesterfield, NJ 08515. For general program questions, call 609-298-4028.
