Livestock Inspector I/II

The State of Hawai‘i is recruiting Livestock Inspectors at levels I and II for work from Hālawa to Kalihi on O‘ahu. Inspectors help protect animal agriculture and public health through disease surveillance, import inspection, quarantine work, regulatory visits, and direct contact with livestock owners and transporters. What you will do • Inspect livestock-production operations and investigate animal-disease concerns • Examine imported animals and related shipments at ports of entry • Apply quarantine, testing, identification, movement, and reporting requirements • Collect information and samples during disease-surveillance and field projects • Explain livestock laws, rules, and biosecurity requirements to owners and industry members • Maintain complete inspection, enforcement, and case records • At level I, learn procedures under supervision and assist with inspection and disease-control assignments • At level II, independently complete import, quarantine, testing, and enforcement work within assigned authority Qualifications and conditions Applicants need a high school diploma or equivalent basic education plus at least one year of experience handling and caring for livestock. Level II requires an additional year of experience in livestock inspection, quarantine, disease testing, or related enforcement work. A valid driver's license is required. The job can include interisland travel, necropsy assistance, lifting up to 40 pounds, and work around animals, ports, farms, odors, weather, and biological hazards. Rotating evening, weekend, and holiday shifts may be assigned. Monthly pay is $3,606–$4,563 at level I and $3,900–$4,933 at level II.
